As told by Stacey...

How We Met

One Sunday evening, I received an Instagram DM from a lady I often buy clothes from. It read: “How are you doing? My brother in the US owns a company here in Ghana, affiliated with a bigger one in the States. He’s looking for someone who’s either a lawyer or almost one to work with for legal counseling. Do you mind speaking with him to know more about it?” I agreed and told her she could give my contact to him.

That’s how I first connected with Michael, her brother. He called me soon after, and we quickly set up a Zoom meeting. What started as a business discussion turned into hours of conversation, covering everything from business and music to life in Ghana, life in America, and his many travels. We became acquaintances, and I was set to be his legal advisor in Ghana.

Over the next few months, we had more Zoom calls, and eventually, he texted me saying he was in Ghana and wanted to meet in person. However, I was in the middle of exams, so I asked him to wait until I was done. When I finally finished, we met for the first time at Vida. Our conversation flowed effortlessly, and we scheduled another meeting for later in the week.

Up until that point, I was convinced we were strictly discussing work. Little did I know, Michael had something else in mind. Our second “business” meeting took place, but this time, we barely touched on legal matters. After an hour or so, I paused and asked, “Ah, Michael, wait o, is this a date?” because by then, he was asking me about my plans for the next five years, my definition of a great family life, whether I wanted kids and how many—questions that one usually doesn’t ask their lawyer.

It was clear this wasn’t just a business meeting anymore. And, as they say, the rest is history…

The Proposal

On January 18, 2024, my life changed in a way I never saw coming. It was a day that turned everything I believed about love, care, and promises into something tangible and real.

That day, my law firm, AB & David Africa, hosted its annual Crystal Ball event at Labadi Beach Hotel. It had been a long and exhausting day, and by the end of it, all I wanted was to collapse into bed and recharge for the next day. But Michael, as always, had other plans—plans that would change my life forever.

After the event, Michael picked me up from the hotel, and as we were heading home, I received a call from my aunt. She mentioned that her niece was in Ghana and needed some legal advice. She asked if I could stop by for a minute. I hesitated because of how tired I was, but when she mentioned taking her niece to my firm, AB & David, the possibility of earning a commission convinced me to make the slight detour. After all, she lived very close to my house, so it wouldn’t hurt to drop by.

When we arrived, my aunt came out to get me from the car. As we walked, she kept stopping to chat, but I didn’t think much of it. Little did I know, she was stalling, buying time for Michael to get into position.

When we finally reached her backyard, I was completely taken aback. There was Michael, down on one knee, with the most beautiful setup I could have imagined. The place was beautifully decorated, and our families—both mine and his—were there, witnessing this incredible moment. And then, the biggest “Marry Me” sign appeared before me. Michael asked me to marry him, and without hesitation, I shouted the biggest, most joyful "YES!"
